Top 10 Events That Draw You In

Hey everone long time no see ^^ been busy with life and helping people I love with life.

Overtime from work has hit hard so I’ve been busy lately and also just recovering from being sick.

Just to note, the reason this is split into two videos is that my FFXIII Review was due at the time and there was a problem with YouTube and I was at a 15 min limit (that no longer is problem now).

But anyway, the following is just games that had some kind of element or twist that helped pull you into the game more! So enjoy and leave a comment :D!

Final Fantasy XIII Review

With XIII-2 out I needed to get 13 done and, well, here’s my two cents.

Explained Absence

I feel I should give an explanation as to why I have not posted to this blog in over a month. If you follow both of my blogs you’ll see that I have been writing, staying vigilant in my plan to recap every Utah Jazz game this season. Where my initial blogging plan has stumbled is in keeping up with this one.

I recognize that a big problem is that this personal blog lacks a singular focus, like Utah Jazz-ed Up has. I wish I could say that is going to change but I have no immediate plans to figure that particular issue out. In theory, I would still like to blog about a variety of topics but so far that has remained a theory.

One of my problems is that I keep having plans in mind for longer blog posts that I never get around to writing out. One solution to this should include keeping working drafts and adding to them when I can. Another is to accept the fact that smaller posts are okay since, well, I am essentially my own boss and this is subject to my own whims. So why not have small posts? At least I’d be writing.

I simply need to make time. Final Fantasy XIII-2 made this difficult and on Tuesday, Mass Effect 3 will make it difficult. I will hopefully review the former rather soon and the latter once I save Earth from the Reapers. Aside from that, I hope to settle into a routine where I can put up some posts with at least a modicum of frequency.

Any tips from fellow bloggers on how to improve on these things would be most welcome!

Dragon Quest Kenshin Review

Have you ever played Dragon Quest Swords on the Wii? Did you happen to know there was a game before it? And it came out before the Wii?

This is Dragon Quest Kenshin, also known as Swordmaster Dragon Quest: Resurrection of the Legendary Sword, a plug-and-play game that only came out in Japan.

Plants Vs Zombies Review

Back on Black Friday, a PS3 copy of PvsZ fell into my hands.  I think it had been about two years from its PC launch.

After a Let’s Play video and some random fun with the new modes I blab a bit about it here in a review. 🙂

Enjoy.

Pier Solar and the Great Architects Review

Pier Solar is most likely a game a lot of people don’t know about due to it being a Sega Genesis title that came out in 2010… yes that’s right 2010.  At the writing of this post it is out of print but the  good news is that there are more planned for release later so I would keep an eye on the two links at the end.

Anyway, Pier Solar is an RPG that has been in the making for YEARS and came out at the very end of 2010. I just finished my Let’s Play of it and I let the ending sit in my mind for few days but below you’ll find my Review of an RPG that hopes to re-light that 16-bit gamer in you!

My review:

Square Goes Fully Mainstream

More detail from Square president, no more non-mainstream games allowed -Destructoid.

Discouraging news from Square-Enix passed along to me today.  They have insisted that all their games have to now fall into the mainstream mold.  I’m not sure what that leaves the company with aside from the Final Fantasy franchise.  It’s an established money maker, and I am party to it, but cutting out innovation and creativity does not sound like a good business practice.

Some of the best games and franchises started out by being new, creative, and original.  Look at games such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Infamous, and Assassin’s Creed.  All of these are games that broke the mold of their genre and have been turned into acclaimed, successful franchises.

Two of the best examples of innovation leading to success are Portal and Ico/SOTC.  Portal started off as a creative spinoff game to Half Life that was a wholly original take on puzzle games.  The sequel followed and was a fantastic game.

Two of the most acclaimed games, from fans and critics alike, came from Sony and what is now Team Ico.  Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were two unique games for the PS2 that set up expansive, beautiful worlds with no explanation of what to do.  You are thrown into the game and figure out what to do as you go along.  They are fantastic games and I am eagerly awaiting their next, The Last Guardian.

Stamping out creativity and insisting on mainstream games would have eliminated Ico, SOTC, Portal, and many other games.  I hope Square learns from this.  The post was from a couple of years ago, I haven’t heard whether that is still true but considering the only games I have heard from Square lately are all Final Fantasy, I’m not counting on it.

‘From’ Wants Us To Die All Over Again

Hello let me 1st say THANK YOU for letting me be here Matt 😀

This both super cool and nice of you 🙂

But anyway you know how a lot of people handed Skyrim Game of the Year? Well I would love you to meet Dark Souls the older brother of Demons Soul, two games that also had the common problem of both losing to Elder Scrolls games for GOTY to most sites and lists.

So if you love to join me in the Video below and “Prepare To Die”.

Gaming in the UK: 2011 Favorites

(I wanted to include a review of Uncharted 3 since it is one of the bigger games to come out this year so I enlisted the help of my British friend, Victor, to share his thoughts on the game.  He went the extra mile by giving his take on three of his favorite games so far.  I plan on sharing my thoughts on the two I have played in a separate post later on.  As Victor doesn’t believe in having much of an online presence (or any it seems) I’ll periodically throw some other stuff up here from him to give another perspective from across the pond, so to speak.  Outside the parenthesis is all him.)

Sequelitis. It seem like every game developer and their grandmother are catching this bug and though I hate how game companies fall back with rehashing their games, blatantly ignoring the problems of their games and not adding anything new and fresh, I have to admit that sometimes it works.

Uncharted 3 comes to mind and though I haven’t played much of the multiplayer component, the single player alone is more than worth the $60 price tag. It reminds me a lot of how yet the Zelda games do little to innovate; they polish the hell out of their games, throw in some new ideas, and keep the franchise running strong. Uncharted joins the tradition, not adding much in the 3rd edition to the series, but making the game as solid as its award winning prequels. Simply put, the shooting mechanics are tight as always, the parkour aspect is fluid and makes a lot of sense compared to others games, and the characters and story are as strong as usual. Even more with brilliant performances by Nolan North as the protagonist, Nathan Drake, and Richard McGonagle as Victor Sullivan, Drake’s mentor and guardian, as well as many, many others. There might not be as many new awe-aspiring set piece moments like in Uncharted 2 that added, but there are still plenty of thrills rivaling the earlier edition to the series. What more can I say? The Uncharted series is the pinnacle of interactive storytelling for video games and with solid game play and an all-star roster of actors lending their voices to iconic characters; you owe it to yourself as a gamer to GET-THIS-GAME!

Skyrim… I can gush over this game like my American friend Matthew, but I’m not. He gave the game it’s praised and I concur with him completely. With that said, I do wish to highlight what Skyrim so… awesome for me. First and foremost, the combat. It’s not as hack-and-slash as I thought it would be, one of the reason Oblivion didn’t stay in my game collection. If anything, it has depth surpassing other games in this genre. For example, combat can be as strategic or hack and slash if you want, but it rewards the player tenfold by playing smart. Learning what armor is best for your play style, what weapons to get, their properties and learning how to best utilize them, as well what perks to get to make you a juggernaut. Hell, it actually makes the game arguably easier and most importantly, fun. This freedom and depth is what draws me in the most. But that’s just one highlight out of many noteworthy ones. Cooking, for example (yes, laugh, get it out of your system) is fun and surprisingly addictive. It’s also beneficial by bestowing the player character with special skills, like increase stamina, increased armor rating/defense, etc. And then there’s armor smithing, alchemy, undead conjuring… too much depth. Yeah, best if I stop there.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution. This might be blasphemy to fans of the 1st game which is arguably one of the best games of all-time, but I enjoyed this game far, far more. Haven’t played the first 2 games, Deus Ex and Deus Ex Invisible War, I went into playing this game think it won’t live up to the hype. Not only does it live up to the hype, but it renewed my faith in SquareEnix which has gone downhill as of lately. Though the game was developed by Eidos… produced by Square… so yeah.

(Edit:  I apparently posted this prematurely.  He has more to say about Deus Ex and now that he’s an author on the blog, he will do so in a later post.  We share affection for Skyrim and Deus Ex.  Both games are definitely worth buying though Skyrim will require a HUGE time investment since you will find yourself sucked in whether you like it or not.  More gaming talk to come later on!)
